2008 PRESENTATION AWARDS NIGHT
Last Friday the club held it's 2008 Presentation Awards Night at the Dandenong Club. A big thank you to all those who attended and to all the awards winners, well done and let's look ahead to the 2009 season and continue to build as a club.
This year's Senior's Best & Fairest winner was Brett Hidgcock. He was a runaway winner for the second year in a row and he continues to impress with every game. Hitchy is going to win a lot more B & F's at our club and we are yet to see the best of his talents.
This year's Runner Up was past dual B & F winner Troy Humphries.
In the Reserves it was an excellent and consistent year by youngster Kaine Bundy that earned him the Best and Fairest award. Kaine will set his sights on establishing himself as a senior player in the next few years and has a bright future ahead. Runners Up this year went to Grant Wyett. Grant was also a very consistent performer and the club congratulates him and all of the players that received awards this year and should look forward to 2009 with plenty of optimism.

RESSIES DEFEATED IN GRAND FINAL
The Reserve's Eagles boys were unlucky on Saturday losing the Grand Final by just one point to South Yarra. After finishing on top of the ladder and winning the first semi final again Mt Waverley the team went into the game as favourites. After leading all day the Lions snatched the lead with only 20 seconds to play. When the siren sounded the Eagles players and coaching staff were devastated as once again the ressies finished runners up just as they did in 2007 against Skye.
Well done to Wormy, Mick and the boys and better luck in 2009.

Texas Hold-Em POKER NIGHT - Saturday, 2nd August, 2008
The Club will be having a 'Texas Hold Em' POKER NIGHT this Saturday Night, the 2nd of August following the home game against Canterbury.
So come along and have a great night and be in the running to win some cool prizes. For further information please see the Prez Davo or Secretary Jenny Davis or anyone on the committee.
Mick Gorman won this last year. I'm sure all the boys will continue to practice and fine tune their 'bluffing' techniques on Thursday night after training.
Here's a few tips:
Try wearing dark shady glasses, a hat or cap and bring along any lucky charms that may help you win.... Or just be like Stevie and smile (no matter what cards you are dealt)...Or be like Big Baz and jump up and down in your seat (no matter what cards you are dealt)... Or be like Davo and have no patience and go all in from the get go (no matter what cards you are dealt) ....Or be like Pricey and never get dealt a winning hand (no matter what cards you are dealt)....Or be like Ramma and be loud and proud just to be there and finally, remember it's not if you win or lose, its how you play the game that counts.....
No bugger that saying, WINNING is everything!!
ENTRY - $30.00
START - 7.00pm
PRIZES - Top 5 Win Prizes
1st Prize - $400.00
2nd Prize - $100.00
Good Luck!!

Eagles to face Mountain Lions on the rebound Saturday 28th June
Mount Waverley v's Doveton Eagles
SENIORS - SFL Broadcast Match
This week the Eagles travel away to face ladder leader Mount Waverley. The Mountain Lions tasted defeat for the first time this year at the hands of the much improved Canterbury Cobras and will be keen to atone for that loss. But the Eagles boys have found some much needed form in recent weeks and need a win to get back in the four.
The match will be broadcast LIVE on RADIO 88.3 from 2pm and will be replayed the following week on the Southern Footy Show on Channel 31.
RESERVES
The reserves match will also be a big game for both sides. A loss to either side will put a dent into top two aspirations. The Eagles have won the last two 'close' encounters and will strive to keep their position on top of the ladder, whereas the Mountain Lions need to win to get back in the four.
Round 11 - Mount Waverley v's Doveton Eagles (Away at Mount Waverley)
Seniors - 2.10pm
Reserves - 11.45am
Thirds - 9.45 am
Congratulations to the Thirds side last week on winning their first match for 2008. The club song was sung with great gusto. I'm sure the seniors and reserves teams will take a leaf out of this teams 'enthusiasm' as it showed what winning means! Well done boys!
Also a big thanks to the senior players who have taken a keen intersest to help out with the Colts team. With seniors vice captain OJ taking up the Coaching role and supported by fellow senior players in Wildy (Waterperson), Hitchy (Runner), Paints (Team Manager), Wrighty (Timekeeper), Reidy (Goal Umpire) and Mottau (Waterperson) the Thirds boys notched up their first win for the season. It was good to see the spirit the Thirds have injected into the club and it continues to grow.

CLUB MILESTONES FOR RAZOR AND MILLSY
The club congratulates Ray Drysdale

this week for reaching 100 games. After hurting his leg badly in a motorbike accident prior to the 2007 season Ray had to sit out and watch as his team mates made it all the way to the finals. Ray first played for the club in 2000 and it's a great achievement to play 100 games for the club after last season's disappointment. Well done mate.
The club also congratulates Chris Mills on reaching 50 games. Both players will line up in the Round 10 Reserves match against local rivals Dandenong Demons on Saturday.

THIRDS TEAM IS A BOOST FOR THE EAGLES IN 2008
The club celebrated a new beginning of sorts last Saturday, sparking memories of the clubs first game way back in 1980. But it was June 21st, 2008 at 9.45am, that's right, IN THE MORNING when our newest team the DOVETON EAGLES THIRDS ran out onto the field to kick the dew off the grass against the Cheltenham Cockatoos. In its inaugural match the Thirds were made up of some new, some old, some recycled and some players that had never played competition before. The team got off to a solid start but ran out of legs in the wet and slippery conditions and were soundly defeated. But, with many more players returning to the seniors and reserves in the coming weeks the Thirds lineup will be bolstered and be more competitive. This game wasn't about winning or losing. It's a new side for the club this year and more importantly for the club's future we must support the Thirds side and promote it. It gives youngsters not ready for senior footy or that miss out on playing due to too many numbers, a game of footy at senior level. This year being an Open Age 'Colts' division in the SFL it means ANY player of any age (above junior level) will get to play. Well done to the league for allowing this Open Age concept to take shape and to the other clubs represented for supporting it. If more clubs in the SFL supported the Thirds as an Open Age league it would force the SFL to keep it in its fixture separate from an U18's Colts Division planned for 2009. It will allow clubs that have too many players missing out every week the opportunity to field a third team so they can play a game of 'footy' instead of turning them away from AFL football. With our club forming an Under 18s team in 2010 the growth at the club looks very promising!
Go Eagles !!!

TRIVIA NIGHT 2008
The club's next function will be a TRIVIA NIGHT. This was a lot of fun last year and Kev Mottau is going to host this one again. Check out all the info on the Trivia night in the Club Functions section at the bottom of the homepage!! See you all there!!

FUNKY LEAVES THE NEST
The club would like to say a fond farewell to Scott 'Funky' Miller as he heads up to Wangarratta. Scott has been a stalwart at the club and hopes to return to the club one day in the future. All the best mate. You will be missed.

PRACTICE MATCH VERSUS OAKLEIGH DISTRICTS 5th APRIL
The club's first major hitout for 2008 saw the Eagles head up to Oakleigh Districts for a much needed practice match. Both the Reserves and Seniors gave a good account of themselves against their Div 2 opponents. Senior coach Barry Giddens was happy with the performance of all the players especially the new signings and the season promises to be a good one for the boys from Doveton.
On Saturday the club plays its first match for premiership points and their opponents will be the boys from the Navy the Cerberus F.C. The game will be a home match for the Eagles at Power Reserve, Doveton.
10.04.2008
SEASON BEGINS ON 12th APRIL
The season will officially begin a week earlier than originally scheduled. Due to Cerberus F.C being unavailable to compete due to ANZAC Day the round 2 game will now be played on 12th April leaving ANZAC weekend free.
Please note training will change from Mondays & Wednesdays to Tuesdays & Thursdays from the 3rd March 2008.
There is about 6 weeks left before the season begins. For all of the players that have made the effort to get to training now is the time to step it up in order to be ready for the start of the season. Players that have not been to training please make an effort as you are letting down your mates by being under prepared. This is the time of year to get fit and work on your skills so try and get to as many training sessions as you can.
If we want to progress further than last year then I suggest we start to get to training and get to know each other.
Barry
(Senior Coach)

PRE-SEASON TRAINING IS NOW IN FULL SWING
Player numbers continue to rise at the Eagles pre-season training. All the coaches are being impressed with the number of youngsters who have come down for a run with the Eagles and the future looks bright for the club. With training stepping up and numbers continuing to grow the Eagles look set for another good year on the field. Many players have been training since January which will give them the fitness required for the long season ahead.
For those who haven't started training it's not too late to get down to the club and get some much needed run in the legs and sharpen the skills up before round 1.
06.02.2008

A good first up turn out has encouraged the coaching staff and the playing group and with a solid preseason will result in playing finals again in 2008. The new senior coach Barry Giddens was very pleased with the turnout and advised all the players to keep turning up to work on their fitness and skill levels.

CLUB FUNDRAISER
Assistance required – Club to make $3,039 plus bonuses
The club has accepted the distribution of white/yellow pages rights for the Narre Warren area. It is a large area to cover with 10,130 phone packs to be delivered. Each pallet has 240 phone book packs on it, therefore we will have to deliver approx 42 pallets. We have an eight week time frame to deliver the books starting on the 1st December 2007. The club is currently waiting on contact from our area distribution manager for finer details. As this is a huge task, the co-operation of all committee members and players is appreciated. As soon as we have contact with the distribution manager, the dates will be advised to conduct the deliveries. We suggest Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays for deliveries until we have distributed them all. As mentioned, the club will advise the specific dates in the near future. This distribution will be a tremendous boost and big fundraiser for the club and is worth $3,039 plus bonuses for efficient delivery.
Let's kick off the 2008 season with a bang and support the club financially so that we are able to get a headstart in paying off league fees and other bills that are needed to keep the club viable.
Get involved in YOUR clubs future and get some preseason fitness too!
Brad Mayo has advised that he is able to arrange for 3 trailers to hold 4 pallets at a time. Therefore we will need 1 driver and 4-6 people minimum per group. We obviously need 3 groups. Could you please advise Kevin Mottau of your willingness to assist in the delivery that will provide our club with much needed financial support. Also, for most players this will be used as a part of pre-season training as it will require running so please get on board. The Coach (Bazza) is fully supportive of this incentive as it helps out the club financially and gets some much needed fitness into the playing group.
We will be able to pick up the pallets in dribs and drabs whenever we like (within business hours). The address is below: -
Victorian Freight Specialists Pty Ltd
13B Dandenong Industrial Estate
13-17 Progress Street

Contact Kevin Mottau (Ph: 98995111 or Mobile: 0419540120) or

MICHAEL HAWKEN TO CO-COACH RESERVES IN 2008
This season Wormy will have a co-coach in Michael Hawken to help out with the Reserves. Mick brings a vast knowledge of the game and his experience will be a huge benefit for all the players and the club next season.
Some of Mick's football exploits include coaching stints with Boronia Park F.C (EDFL & YVMDFL), Forest Hill F.C (EDFL), Emerald F.C (YVMDFL) and more recently was the Senior Coach of local derby rivals the Dandenong Demons F.C (SFL).

BIG BAZZA NEW EAGLES COACH
The Doveton Eagles F.C president Paul Davis has announced that the club has appointed former player and club official BARRY GIDDENS as the new seniors coach for 2008.
Barry first played for the Eagles back in 1989. 'Big Bazza' was renowned for his toughness at the contest and never took a backward step. He was a versatile footballer and played mainly in defense but was more than capable when moved forward.
Barry showed a lot of promise as a youngster and represented the Dandenong VFA U19's side before stints at the Eagles and then MPNFL sides Seaford, Bonbeach and Dromana, eventually finishing his playing days with the Doveton Eagles in 2006.
More recently Barry represented the club as the Tribunal Advocate and was a team runner from time to time prior to that. Two seasons ago Barry helped the senior coach run the bench and this I’m sure gave him some valuable experience and the taste of one day coaching the club.
Barry’s brothers (Mick, Phil and David) have also represented the club with distinction. Phil and David were a part of the 1995 Senior Premiership team.
Barry’s goals and aspirations as senior coach and his passion for success at the Eagles will I’m sure rub off on the playing group, giving them a new direction and hope in 2008. As we all know Finals are not won on ability alone! It takes a lot of hard work on and off the field by everyone at the club to get to the finals and be successful.
This hard work starts NOW!...
Please read below Barry's coaching goals and aspirations for the 2008 Season
Barry Giddens to coach Eagles in 2008
Welcome All,
I would firstly like to thank the Doveton Eagles Football Club for giving me the opportunity to Coach the club in 2008.
I believe that the secret to the success of a football club is to have everyone involved feel part of the achievements and failures of a club.
This includes:
The playing group playing for each other regardless of where you play. i.e. Seniors or Reserves.
That the team goals are more important than the individual goals.
That everyone involved with the club has a role to play. (Playing or Non-Playing)
That we respect everyone’s role within the club.
That we all understand the direction and we all contribute to this direction.
Open and honest communication.
If we can succeed in ensuring that everyone involved with the club understands what we are trying to achieve and that no matter how big or how small of a role you play within the club, we all contribute to the overall success in some way or another, then I believe we have the makings of a successful club in 2008 and into the future.
I would like to finish by saying that I am looking forward to the challenges that we as a club will face in the coming year and with everyone working together, players, officials and supporters we will be able to taste success.
Barry Giddens
Senior Coach
PLEASE NOTE: The Reserves this year will be co-coached by Cameron Womersley and Michael Hawken. Wormy can be contacted on 0412449978 and Mick can be contacted on 0418540677.
